The racial makeup of the city is 54.53% White, 43.87% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 1.05% from two or more races. 0.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,331 households out of which 33.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.2% are married couples living together, 20.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.4% are non-families. 31.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 3.02.
