Avon Park is a city located in Highlands County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,542.

Demographics

census of 2000, there are 8,542 people, 3,218 households, and 2,114 families residing in the city. The population density is 710.8/km² (1,841.8/mi²). There are 3,916 housing units at an average density of 325.9/km² (844.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 58.90% White, 29.42% African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.69% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 8.35% from other races, and 2.28% from two or more races. 18.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,218 households out of which 28.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.6% are married couples living together, 17.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.3% are non-families. 28.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.08. In the city the population is spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 11.1% from 18 to 24, 23.6% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 20.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.2 males. The median income for a household in the city is $23,576, and the median income for a family is $27,617. Males have a median income of $21,890 versus $18,678 for females. The per capita income for the city is $11,897. 27.6% of the population and 21.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 40.4% are under the age of 18 and 13.4% are 65 or older.
