Austhorpe

Austhorpe is a suburb of Leeds. Originally, it was a village with Norse origins. It appeared in the Doomsday Book as Ossetorp.

The civil engineer John Smeaton was born at Austhorpe Lodge and died there after suffering a stroke. The lodge has since been demolished and all that remains of the estate is one of the gate houses and a single wall of the old barn. The estate once had a mansion, a separate study house, and an observatory and windmill which were built by Smeaton.

Most of the land was used for the building of a housing estate and the rest was given to the owners of Austhorpe Hall, which is still standing.

Austhorpe also has the Sky Liner Fish and Chip shop, voted the best in Leeds for two years running.
