Atwood is a city located in Rawlins County, Kansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,279. It is the county seat of Rawlins County6.

census of 2000, there are 1,279 people, 577 households, and 347 families residing in the city. The population density is 474.8/km² (1,229.7/mi²). There are 708 housing units at an average density of 262.8/km² (680.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.67% White, 0.16% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. 0.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 577 households out of which 23.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.0% are married couples living together, 6.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.7% are non-families. 36.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.12 and the average family size is 2.78. In the city the population is spread out with 21.7% under the age of 18, 3.5% from 18 to 24, 21.7% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 29.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 48 years. For every 100 females there are 89.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.2 males.
