Athens-Clarke County is a County located in Clarke County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the County had a total population of 101,489.

Geography

\nAccording to the
United States Census Bureau, the County has a total area of 314.1 km² (121.3 mi²). 312.8 km² (120.8 mi²) of it is land and 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.40% water.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 101,489 people, 39,706 households, and 19,694 families residing in the County. The population density is 324.4/km² (840.2/mi²). There are 42,126 housing units at an average density of 134.7 persons/km² (348.8 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the County is 64.89% White, 27.25% African American, 0.21% Native American, 3.13% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.08% from other races, and 1.41% from two or more races. 6.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 39,706 households out of which 22.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 32.6% are married couples living together, 13.3% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 50.4% are non-families. 29.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.95. In the County the population is spread out with 17.8% under the age of 18, 31.3% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 15.4% from 45 to 64, and 8.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 25 years. For every 100 females there are 95.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.2 males. The median income for a household in the County is $28,403, and the median income for a family is $41,607. Males have a median income of $30,482 versus $23,069 for females. The per capita income for the County is $17,123. 28.3% of the population and 14.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 24.8% are under the age of 18 and 13.4% are 65 or older.
