census2 of 2000, there are 13,004 people, 4,601 households, and 3,519 families residing in the county. The population density is 3/km² (9/mi²). There are 5,400 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 77.08% White, 1.65% Black or African American, 0.88% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 16.79% from other races, and 2.87% from two or more races. 40.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,601 households out of which 40.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.70% are married couples living together, 9.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.50% are non-families. 21.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.81 and the average family size is 3.29. In the county, the population is spread out with 31.50% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 27.30% from 25 to 44, 20.50% from 45 to 64, and 12.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 96.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.20 males. The median income for a household in the county is $34,036, and the median income for a family is $37,017. Males have a median income of $33,223 versus $21,846 for females.
