Altamont is a town located in Franklin County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 6,137.

United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 337.0 km² (130.1 mi²). 304.6 km² (117.6 mi²) of it is land and 32.3 km² (12.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.60% water.


\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 6,137 people, 2,429 households, and 1,530 families residing in the town. The population density is 20.1/km² (52.2/mi²). There are 3,118 housing units at an average density of 10.2/km² (26.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.56% White, 1.27% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 0.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,429 households out of which 32.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% are married couples living together, 12.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.0% are non-families. 30.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.97. In the town the population is spread out with 24.6% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 101.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.9 males.
