Alleghany County, Virginia

Alleghany County is a county located in the U.S. State of Virginia. As of 2000, the population was 12,926 within its borders at that time. Its county seat is Covington6.

Note: The town of Clifton Forge is not included in any Alleghany County data. In 2000, Clifton Forge was an independent city separate from the county. However, in 2001, Clifton Forge relinquished its city charter and reincorporated as a town; as a town, it is now a part of Alleghany County. The 2000 population of Alleghany County, including Clifton Forge, was 17,215.

Geography

\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,154 km² (446 mi²). 1,152 km² (445 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.23% water.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census2 of 2000, there are 12,926 people, 5,149 households, and 3,866 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km² (29/mi²). There are 5,812 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.35% White, 2.45% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.53% from two or more races. 0.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,149 households out of which 29.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.20% are married couples living together, 8.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.90% are non-families. 22.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 2.85. In the county, the population is spread out with 22.80% under the age of 18, 6.20% from 18 to 24, 26.80% from 25 to 44, 28.50% from 45 to 64, and 15.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 99.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.30 males. The median income for a household in the county is $38,545, and the median income for a family is $45,843. Males have a median income of $35,120 versus $20,855 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,635. 7.10% of the population and 4.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 8.60% are under the age of 18 and 10.80% are 65 or older.

As an independent city, Covington is not part of Alleghany County, despite its status as the county seat.
