Afton is a village located in Chenango County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 836.

Geography

\nAccording to the
United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.1 km² (1.6 mi²). 3.9 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.00% water.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 836 people, 366 households, and 237 families residing in the village. The population density is 212.4/km² (550.4/mi²). There are 403 housing units at an average density of 102.4 persons/km² (265.3 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 98.44% White, 0.12% African American, 1.08% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.24% from two or more races. 1.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 366 households out of which 27.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.6% are married couples living together, 11.5% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 35.2% are non-families. 34.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 2.86. In the village the population is spread out with 22.7% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 91.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.2 males. The median income for a household in the village is $34,412, and the median income for a family is $38,194. Males have a median income of $30,972 versus $21,250 for females.
