A Scandal in Bohemia

A Scandal in Bohemia was the first of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories to be published in The Strand Magazine. (Two of the four Sherlock Holmes novels—-A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of Four-—preceded the short story cycle.) Beginning with the dramatic appearance of a masked aristocrat at Holmes' 221B Baker Street abode, and hanging on a blackmail plot orchestrated by a vivacious opera singer, the story is considered one of the Holmesian Canon's best.
